Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor of Biology (UNC Chapel Hill)

    The Department of Biology at UNC Chapel Hill is hiring an Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor. This is a non-tenured, permanent, teaching focused position. The position calls for teaching 3 classes per semester, which may include fundamental classes for biology majors such as cell biology and genetics, and biodiversity (ecology, evolution, and organismal biology), general biology for non-majors, and advanced biology classes in areas of the candidate’s expertise. The new faculty member will also be expected to engage in departmental service and will have opportunities for summer teaching if desired. A Ph.D. is required for this position, although ABD candidates who expect to have completed their degree by the appointment start date will be considered. 

    All candidates must have a record of independent college teaching experience. The strongest candidates will have relevant experience teaching classes in-person, in addition to remote and online instruction. The position will be for an initial fixed term period of 3 years with potential for renewal; promotion is possible in 6-year increments. Start date is July 1, 2023.

    All interested candidates must submit:

    1. A cover letter that includes a summary of your teaching experience.
    2. A CV (including courses taught).
    3. A 2-page statement of teaching philosophy
    4. A 1-page diversity statement (uploaded as "Other Document"). The diversity statement should demonstrate the candidate’s commitment and capacity to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching, mentoring, and/or outreach and engagement.
    5. Any available evidence of teaching effectiveness (uploaded as "Other Document 2")
    6. Contact information for at least 2 professional references, at least one of which must address the candidate’s potential as an educator. References will not be contacted for a letter until later in the process.

    If invited to a preliminary screening interview:

    1. Candidates will be asked to submit a teaching demonstration video, teaching an introductory biology topic of their choosing. The video should be between 5 and 10 minutes in length.
    2. References listed in the application will be contacted to provide letters of reference. 2 letters of reference. Uploaded letters of reference must be signed and printed on institutional letterhead and should be addressed to the Teaching Faculty Search Committee.
