In partnership with the SABER Executive Committee, the Place-Based Subcommittee (hereafter referred to as ‘the Subcommittee’) is acting on recommendations from our membership initially solicited during the organization’s 2019 self-study by hosting a Place-Based Keynote Speaker during the annual meeting. This year’s inaugural Place-Based Keynote Speaker, Justice Jones, is the Environmental Advocacy coordinator for the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association (PPNA). The Powderhorn Park neighborhood is located in the city of Minneapolis, MN. Founded in around 1905, it is a highly diverse neighborhood where upwards of 20% of its residents are foreign-born. On May 25, 2020 the neighborhood was the site of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. The site of his death has since been converted to George Floyd Square in memoriam. Ms. Jones will not only deliver the Saturday plenary, but will engage with the Invited Speaker Committee, SABER members, and attend sessions of the conference. The Committee is proud to facilitate a deeper engagement with the greater Minneapolis community by learning from and engaging with local residents and organizations to explore ways in which our conference and professional practice can better attend to a sense of place and broader questions pertaining to equity. The work of this committee aligns with and reflects SABER’s organizational goals of continually striving to be an inclusive BER community that reflects a diversity of post-secondary educators and emerging scholars, and facilitates connection and collaboration among BER investigators and other stakeholders. We encourage those who are interested to peruse the Community Business Directory prepared by Office of the Dean and Financial Services Office and crowd-sourced throughout Carlson School of Management (CSOM), this directory features small and local businesses in neighborhoods around the University of Minnesota, or owned by people who are underrepresented in business leadership. This crowd-sourced list of businesses contains potential partners for units looking to diversify their suppliers and support local business. Businesses in this list are not endorsed by CSOM.Engaging with the Local CommunityAs visitors to conference host cities we share space with residents and contribute to their economy. We can be more than transient tourists by learning about and connecting with host city communities. This process of reciprocity can enrich our time there and give us insight into ways that we can engage with and serve both our host and our home communities. We invite conference participants to join us in thinking about how we can meaningfully engage with host communities while attending conferences. Questions to get the conversation started include:
Experiencing local culture through visiting and supporting local businesses and connecting with community-based organizations can allow us to meaningfully engage with our hosts while at the SABER Annual Meeting. To this end, we include a list of local businesses and other organizations that meeting participants may enjoy visiting and connecting with during their time in the Twin Cities.
