In honor of the tenth anniversary of the Department of Biology Teaching and Learning (BTL) at the University of Minnesota, we are excited to present a panel discussion exploring the history of Biology Education Research and its future trajectory. Join us as we delve into the significant milestones in the field and envision the advancements yet to come.

Rob Brooker focuses on the impact of Vision & Change on student learning and other aspects of student experiences

Brian Couch
Susan J. Rosowski Professor, School of Biological Sciences
University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Brian Couch conducts research centered on using assessment to diagnose student learning and improve instruction. He also teaches introductory molecular and cellular biology.

Dave Esparza
Ph.D. Candidate; Chair of Discipline-Based Education Research Scholars-in-Training (DBER-SiT)
Cornell University
Dave Esparza focuses on characterizing relationships between student social interactions and equitable student outcomes in undergraduate field and lab courses in biology

Angela Google
Assistant Professor of Biology Education Research
University of Rhode Island
Dr. Angela Google examines factors that impact the science identity development of individuals with marginalized identities in the context of post secondary STEM education.

Jeremy Hsu
Assistant Professor of Biology, Schmid College of Science and Technology
Chapman University
Jeremy started his career as an instructional assistant professor in biology, prior to starting his current position focusing on teaching and biology education research in 2022; he remains committed to promoting evidence-based teaching and teaches courses on molecular genetics and evolution.

Kimberly Tanner 
Professor of Biology; Director, SEPAL: Science Education Partnership and Assessment Laboratory
San Francisco State University
Kimberly Tanner is a first-generation college graduate, neuroscientist, biology education researcher, and proud colleague and mentor of many SEPAL alumni.
