    Job Description:

    The Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Salve Regina University encourages student learning through innovative pedagogy and mentored research experiences at the undergraduate level. Many courses in the curriculum include original research experiences. Most students take on an independent research project for at least one semester or summer. The department is housed in a newly-renovated science wing and maintains a diverse offering of state of the art laboratory equipment. 85% of Biology graduates are in professional school, graduate school or a job in the field within 9 months of graduation.

    BASIC FUNCTION:

    A grant-funded teaching postdoctoral associate position is available in the lab of Dr. Belinda Barbagallo in the Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences.  The candidate will conduct research aimed to understand the link between developmental exposure to the environmental toxin PFOS and the prevalence of type II diabetes and metabolic disease using the Drosophila melanogaster model system. The candidate will also receive pedagogical mentoring while teaching six contact hours a semester within the Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences in the sophomore level cell biology course and their areas of expertise.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Conduct independent research projects in line with the overarching research focus of the principle investigator.
    • Present research findings at meetings and assist in writing manuscripts.
    • Mentor undergraduate research students in the laboratory.
    • Contributes to the Biology department teaching mission (12 contact hours per year).
    • Teaches courses both at the introductory and advanced level.

    Requirements:

    • Earned terminal degree in the field (doctorate in a related area of biology by time of hire).
    • Experience addressing research questions using the Drosophila melanogaster model system. Experience with the C. elegans system is a plus.
    • A strong background in genetics, molecular biology and/or biochemistry
