    Human Biology, Fixed Term, Instructor

    Position Description

The College of Natural Science at Michigan State University welcomes applications for a full-time, 9-month, fixed-term instructor position beginning August 1, 2021 (with the expectation of yearly re-appointments based on satisfactory performance and continued funding). The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to work with faculty and graduate/undergraduate teaching assistants to teach science writing and communication courses for our Human Biology Program. These writing-intensive courses provide students with opportunities to integrate critical and scientific thinking skills with foundational knowledge in evolution and human biology. Students also develop their abilities to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information in the biological sciences. Candidates for this position should have both disciplinary expertise in the biological sciences and a record of proficiency with scientific communication.

Successful candidates will have a Master’s or Ph.D. in the biological sciences or an equivalent discipline, scientific writing experience, and undergraduate teaching experience. The candidate must have a strong commitment to student success and to creating an inclusive learning environment for a diverse group of students. The candidate must also be committed to continued professional development and is expected to become part of the vibrant community of scholars engaged in improving undergraduate STEM education at MSU. Prior experiences with teaching science communication, community engaged learning, and other evidence-based pedagogical strategies at the undergraduate level are highly desirable.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter (which discusses your interest in the position, includes a brief teaching philosophy, and addresses how issues of diversity and inclusion shape your pedagogy) to jobs.msu.edu (posting 707650). The applicant should also provide the contact information for three professional references; letters will be requested during the screening process. Please direct questions regarding the position to Elizabeth Tinsley Johnson, Assistant Professor of Human Biology and Chair of the Search Committee (etinsley@msu.edu).
