    The General Biology program at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville invites applications for a Lecturer, beginning August 1, 2023. This is a non-tenure track, full time, 9-month position that is renewable yearly, contingent upon evidence of excellent teaching and performance of programmatic duties. The duties of a Lecturer may include a combination of teaching (a full load equals two large lecture courses per semester), coordinating the curriculum and graduate student teaching assistants for lab or discussion courses, or administrative duties regarding programmatic assessment.

    A priority in the program is exhibiting care and concern about student performance and a desire to constantly revise and improve course materials to improve student learning and well-being. Instructors in the General Biology program are expected to adopt evidence-based pedagogies, actively engage in our teaching community, and be willing to learn from and work with others to deliver exceptional learning experiences. Participating in professional development is encouraged and supported to foster these abilities, including an annual teaching and learning retreat. It is also expected that Lecturers will contribute to the General Biology program by:

    • Participating in yearly peer reviews of their own teaching, as well as that of their peers
    • Meeting / coordinating course delivery with others who teach the same course
    • Assisting in the development of new courses as needed
    • Participating in programmatic assessment activities
    • Working with GTAs to keep abreast of activities in lab and discussions courses
    • Other duties as needed

    Salary is $50,000 for two semesters, paid over twelve months, plus benefits with the opportunity for promotion. Summer teaching is an option for additional pay.

    Qualifications

    • A PhD in Biology or related field by the time of appointment
    • Undergraduate teaching experience and evidence of familiarity with contemporary pedagogical and student success approaches
    • Ability to function as part of teaching team

    The General Biology program is especially interested in individuals with experience with or interest in teaching courses for non-majors.
