    Lecturer in the School of Molecular Biosciences

    • Applications are invited for a fulltime Lecturer in the School of Molecular Sciences (SMB) at Washington State University. The successful candidate will contribute to the undergraduate mission at SMB by (1) teaching undergraduate courses in microbiology, genetics and cell biology, biochemistry, and/or science communication, (2) participating in curricular redesign and realignment activities, and (3) conducting research on undergraduate learning in SMB.      

      The successful candidate will be expected to teach a minimum of one undergraduate SMB course per academic semester (e.g., microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology lab), contribute to programmatic assessment efforts, and assist with education research efforts in the department under the supervision of Dr. Erika Offerdahl. Current research efforts include investigating scientific argumentation in introductory biology, the effects of formative assessment and feedback on student learning, and development of scientific visual literacy in the molecular life sciences. 

      Discipline-based education research is growing at Washington State University, with faculty and collaborators in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, and mathematics, as well as a number of new postdocs, graduate and undergraduate student researchers. In addition to teaching, THEsuccessful candidate will have an opportunity to mentor and work with many individuals and participate in weekly education journal clubs and research meetings centered on undergraduate STEM teaching and learning.

      Minimum qualifications include: 

    ·       Ph.D. in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biology education research, or closely related field 
    ·       Experience teaching undergraduate courses in microbiology, cell biology, or science communication.
    ·       Strong oral and written communication skills.
    ·       Demonstrated commitment to inclusion and diversity in undergraduate STEM
    ·       Ability and desire to work collaboratively and work independently
    • Preferred qualifications include:

    ·       Experience mentoring undergraduate or graduate students in research.
    ·       Familiarity with literature on undergraduate teaching and learning.
    ·       Expertise with education research methods, quantitative research methods and/or statistics (proficiency in multilevel statistical modeling using R
    ·       Experience using R to perform statistical analyses

    The Lecturer will be appointed for a one-year period beginning August 2020 with the possibility of extension for up to two additional years based on satisfactory performance.
