The School of Natural Resources at University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) is searching for a full time post-doctoral position in science education research to work with Jenny Dauer and Joe Dauer. The postdoctoral scholar will research how students’ reason across biological levels within the context of socio-ecological systems. The research stems from extensive work creating a general science class called Science and Decision-making for a Complex World. The course uses decision-making tools based on established research in the decision-sciences and science education fields to foster science literacy as students practice decisions about socio-scientific issues (SSIs). The goal of this project is to transport the systems-thinking aspects of this course (i.e. reasoning across levels, reason about the connections between natural and social dimensions) into an introductory biology course for life science majors using socio-ecological issues like conservation, restoration, and management.

The successful applicant will engage in qualitative and quantitative research on both courses resulting in understanding of student challenges in decision-making, assessment tools for evaluating systems thinking, and innovative pedagogical approaches to support students’ reasoning. On-going data collection will include student interviews related to socio-ecological issues, and other qualitative and quantitative assessments. The post-doctoral researcher will also be expected to collaborate with the Dauer’s to develop the curriculum for introductory biology.

Candidates should have a PhD in a science education research or in a science field (ecological, earth science, biological, environmental or agricultural areas are most relevant) with significant interest and experience in science education research. The ideal candidate will have experience working in undergraduate science education research and have strong quantitative and qualitative research skills and experience. The candidate must have experience working with diverse groups and have strong communication (verbal and written) and excellent organizational abilities.

The post-doctoral position is a one-year (12 month) appointment starting spring 2020 or potentially earlier, possibly renewable for up to 2 years, with a salary of $48,000, including benefits. To apply send a cover letter, CV and contact information for three references to Jenny Dauer (jenny.dauer@unl.edu). The position will remain open until filled.

UNL has a large and active discipline-based education research community with many opportunities for professional development, mentorship and collaboration. The University of Nebraska is committed to a pluralistic campus community through affirmative action, equal opportunity, work-life balance, and dual careers.
