Apply for the Scholars-in-Training Travel Award!

The DBER graduate and postdoctoral Scholars-in-Training (DBER-SiT), with the support of the SABER leadership, extend the invitation for applications to the second annual scholars-in-training travel award (due April 15th, 11:59pm Pacific Time). The goal of these awards is to reduce the financial burden of attending and presenting at the annual SABER meeting, facilitating the presence of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers as well as supporting attendees from minority-serving institutions. Improving access to the annual SABER meeting is part of a movement towards a more inclusive community and a more diverse SABER meeting. Successful applicants may be awarded up to $500 to assist in travel to the 2020 SABER meeting (depending on available funding).

Interested individuals, limited to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, will complete and submit their application through the link provided below. Application packets will consist of a questionnaire addressing 1) applicant demographics, including if they are a graduate student or postdoctoral researcher, 2) the applicant’s existing travel funding, and 3) a personal statement. This personal statement (500-750 words) should detail the applicant’s need for financial support (including prior or additional efforts to secure funding for the meeting attendance) and how their attendance at the SABER meeting can promote an inclusive community and conference atmosphere. The personal statement should also speak to the impact of attending SABER on the professional development of the applicant. Applicants will also submit their SABER 2020 abstract; only applicants who are presenting at this summer’s meeting will be eligible for the award.

Travel Award applications will be reviewed by SABER faculty volunteers as well as members of the DBER-SiT leadership team (total of 3 reviewers for each application). Priority for awardees will be given to first-time SABER attendees as well as applicants from minority-serving or primarily undergraduate institutions. Expectations are for awardees to be active participants at the SABER meeting: presenting their research, participating in session discussions, and attending the DBER-SiT Special Interest Groups. We look forward to reviewing applications, and to a great SABER meeting in 2020!
